UPDATE - WEEK 100 - COMING UP ON JUNE 2TH 2010
RELEASES
DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB
JAMES T. COTTON "ON TIME (RICK WADE)" (Spectral) 16.98$
DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB / / / /
After a two-year wait since Tadd Mullinix's last release as James T. Cotton, the man storms back with On Time, four tracks packed with more music than any EP has a right to.
EFDEMIN "CHICAGO" (Dial) 24.98$
DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB / / / /
Dial maintain a very respectable run of releases with the second album from one of Berlin's more interesting house heads, Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin. Whether solo or as Pigon with Oliver Kargl, he's always ensured a richly detailed and classically informed take on house music, incorporating a DJ/producer's innate sense of groove with a listener's ear for filigree intricacies. It's these twin factors that lend 'Chicago' such a gracefully mature gait and developed dancefloor narrative, creating lucid scenes like the sophisticated 'Night Train' with its elegant bassline swing and gently active atmospheres or the exquisitely crafty NSI. style enhancemnts of 'Oh My God'. Meanwhile 'There Will Be Singing' gives tribute to the titular city with that refined Berlin take on its qualities, filtering the lushest elements through a clean, white, minimalist frame of reference. Again, the fizzing rhythmic activities of NSI spring to mind on 'Nothing Is Everything' and the albums longest statement 'Wonderland (The Race For Space)' glides home with sub cushioned shimmies and a delicate percussive lilt that Villalobos would be proud of. Connoisseurs of real high end European house have nothing to fear here.
BAYARA CITIZENS "Electric Africa (Joe Claussell Remix)" (Sacred Rhythm) 16.98$
DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB / / / /
Add to orderJoe Claussell reworks in his own unique way, the BAYARA CITIZENS' "Electric Afrika". Warm, epic & percussive, one-sided and limited!
RICK WILHITE "VIBES NEW & RARE" (Rush Hour Ltd) 16.98$
DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB / / / /
Add to orderHighly limited initial run, Repress available soon.] Rick Wilhite and his Vibes new&rare music record store have been a main source in Detroit for over 17 years. His store is the place to go for many Detroiters looking for new soulful, electronic music. And as a DJ and promoter Rick has been holding it down for years. Next to that he mostly known for his affiliation with Three Chairs (together with Kenny Dixon Jr & Theo Parrish) and for his solo recordings, under his The Godson pseudo. Now its time for Rick to get his peers and friends in the mix for his first compilation, aptly titled Vibes new&rare music. The compilation is spread out over four 12”s, which will be followed by a compilation CD with exclusive tracks and features only the best of Chicago and Detroit electronic music. All tracks are new and exclusive. The second release brings Rick’s long time friend and fellow 3Chairs producer Theo Parrish to the table. Theo gives us an adventurous ride like only Theo can. Starting out on a blues tip, this track morphs into a string laden jazz affair without missing a beat. Epic stuff! On the b-side it’s a one-way ride to Chicago with Ricardo Miranda blasting on the car stereo. This relative newcomer, who has recorded for Hour House Is Your Rush and Vega Records, really outdoes himself on ‘Urbanism’. As we cruise into town, heading straight to Lakeshore Drive, this track kicks off so soulful, yet so raw! It reminds us of the best days of Prescription Underground, on which this easily could have been released. Addictive.

DEEP HOUSE / MINIMAL HOUSE / DUB / / / /
Add to orderMOODYmann unveils a new limited edition 12″ EP featuring five previously unreleased tracks from the vaults.Credited to MOODY and on the producer’s own KDJ imprint it traverses a range of styles, from cracked jazz to his trademark low-slung house sound. Some brief notes on the provenance of each track are provided. Lead track ‘Ol’ Dirty Vinyl (U Used To Know)’ was apparently recorded in three hours “in Vienna in some hotel near the castle”, while ‘We Don’t Care’ (featuring Pitch Black City) is from some time in the late 1990s. The Mick Collins-featuring ‘No Feedback’ was recorded live in Detroit at a Dirtbombs show, and ‘It’s 2 Late 4 U And Me’ (with Bubs Fiddler on bass and Amp Fiddler on keys) was recorded in London, 2009. As for closing salvo ‘The Hacker’, MOODY simply says, “Don’t remember (long fckin time ago)”. Quoted from MOODYmann-presents-ol-dirty-vinyl/">Factmag.com

AL USHER "HILVERSUM" (MISERICORD) 16.98$
DISCO EDITS / ITALO DISCO / COSMIC DISCO / NU DISC / / / /
After a short hiatus, misericord is back for 2010 with more off-kilter missives for back-room massive. first up is the welcome return of mr al usher. his “gnanfou” ep christened the label back in the summer of 2007 and was rapturously received / licensed all over the place. al’s been quiet of late, busy being a dad and doing a proper job, but prins thomas put his out of the loop gem “lullaby for robert” out again in 2009 to much acclaim. this new release “hilversum” is very much its follow-up: al at his most unashamedly gorgeous, re-contextualising an old Deutsche Neue Welle melody and weaving it into a characteristically intricate and beautiful piece of post-balearic loveliness. for the flip we commissioned a remix from one of europe’s most exciting new producers, barcelona’s john talabot. his astonishing delorean remix was a mainstay of our dj sets last year and he’s done us just as proud on this one. his “wilderness mix” is an absolute stormer - he chops and loops al’s original, transforming it into an anthemic mid-tempo piano and percussion workout with an unashamedly ecstatic breakdown. it has already been proudly featured on ewan’s kompakt mix CD “we are proud of our choices”. early DJ support comes from the likes of luke solomon, chris duckenfield, will saul, prince language, nathan gregory wilkins and filippo “naughty” moscatello.
VON SPAR "TROOPS (ROBOLLEDO)" (italic) 16.98$
DISCO EDITS / ITALO DISCO / COSMIC DISCO / NU DISC / / / /
A rousing anthem enriched with a krauty disco groove and mixes by PRINCE LANGUAGE & REBOLLEDO.
OOFT! "UMBILICAL CHORD" (Popular Peoples Front Special Ops) 16.98$
DISCO EDITS / ITALO DISCO / COSMIC DISCO / NU DISC / / / /
Following the huge RüFDug release was never going to be easy, but the PPF crew have lined up a heavyweight release schedule for this burgeoning offshoot label. Over the last few years OOFT!'s Ali alongside Graeme 'Revenge' Clark have taken the underground music scene by storm. Crafting their own unique, trademark sound in the often overpopulated 'Edits' market, pretty much single-handedly instigating the pitched down House sound resurgence & running a superb Blog, digital promotions company and forging ahead with their own productions as well as being consumate DJ's and party throwers . These boys ARE NOT messing around ! Here's what Ali had to say: "Umbilical Chord is a typical example of house music the way we like it – simple, hooky, and squarely focussed on the floor. It's one of those tracks born out of some jamming on a new piece of studio kit - a Roland SH-201 keyboard synthesizer. All the riffs are from the 201, but due to not paying attention whilst tweaking the sounds they’re forever lost inside that machine never to be replayed! The track came together really quickly after recording in the synth parts, with The Revenge supplying new beats on the Dub Mix which for us is the definitive version of Umbilical Chord." The PPF were in the Glasgow area last year and checked out the guys own night before heading to the Sub Club to finish off the evening. Graeme was kind enough to hand over a handful of new productions, one of which was 'Umbilical Chord' We immediately fell for the raw simplicity of the track, pure and timeless House music, which is stripped back enough to slip as easily into a Techno set as a Disco one. And given that the only two people who had it (Sub Club's legendary resident Harri & the PPF) have been mercilessly rinsing it for close to a year, we thought it was high time it reached a wider audience.
SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER "THE LOVE QUADRANT" (Kinnego) 16.98$
DISCO EDITS / ITALO DISCO / COSMIC DISCO / NU DISC / / / /
Hi-concept inter-dimensional disco-tronic fusions from Space Dimension Controller, aka Belfast's Jack Hamill. The young producer has created something quite special for the second release on Kinnego Records (run by Boxcutter and friends) taking cues from jazz-fusion inspired disco-house, electronica and perhaps a touch of the auld dubstep to create two gorgeous groovers with an uncannily well-defined character. A-side 'The Love Quadrant' contains the space-waif vocals of Kat Kirk over skweeed purple synths with distant keys and a grandly spacious atmosphere backed up by a story that we won't go into right now (you'll have to buy it to find out!), while the flipside takes a more abstract and dubbier option overidden by a uniquely odd sense of melody and harmony with a strange metallic sound sphere. Maybe the best way we could put it would be if Boxcutter met Black Devil Disco club for a session on Mir, and Buzz Aldrin recorded it from the next pod, it may sound like this. Check!!

LEMOS "YPOMONI" (ORPHEA) 16.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
Second and long awaited installment of the newborn Greek Label Orpheas.Lemos's time now to give his imprint to us by releasing a rather special track.Ypomoni is a well produced track with heavy bassline and a catchy sax riff that you wont forget.Dub mix is a more stripped down version of the same track maintaing the elements of the original. No more introduction is needed.Just try em to a good soundsystem and you ll see for yourselves.
IAN SIMMONDS "THE BURGENLAND REWORKED" (Musik Krause) 16.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
One original track and three musically remix highlights by DAVE AJU, EVEN TUELL & KRAUSE DUO.
REBOOT "RAMBON" (Cadenza) 16.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
Six years since its founding, Cadenza passes a significant milestone with catalog number 50. And who better to preside over the ceremonies than Reboot, fresh from his album Shunyata and showing no signs of slowing down. What’s immediately striking about the track is that it doesn’t sound like a studio concoction. It has all the spontaneity and dynamics of a storming live performance. It’s crafted with a DJ in mind, with one of Reboot’s perfect grooves assembling itself almost magically, with every percussive line snapping into place. But for all the naturalism of the rhythm, there’s a powerful sense of strangeness, a kind of ambient undertow, as sounds from the real world (the clatter of dishes, a pitched-down murmur, distant strains of radio) seep in and color the background. The track picks up steam with a succession of tightly looped vocals and subtle percussive buildups; it feels less like a composition than a DJ mix, really, the kind where the parts combine to create something far greater than their sum. And out of that emerges a melody— not your typical four-bar riff, but a long, unspooling ribbon, a meandering river, a hypnotic lullaby. For the B-side, Luciano remixes “Uruana,” the album’s undulating opening cut. Extending the six-minute sketch to 10 minutes and reinforcing its structure, Luciano’s mix feels almost like an edit. Of the original song’s burbling synthesizers and fluid, rolling drum patterns, he’s actually changed very little.
ELLEN ALLIEN "FLASHY FLASHY" (Bpitch Control) 16.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
Bpitch Ctrl head honcho - Ellen Allien returns with a first taster of her forthcoming album "Dust". "FLASHY FLASHY" is a certified dancefloor bomb, with it's angular synth riff, chunky beat and general (good) oddness - including the androgynous vocals. The Alexi Delano remix brings it to darker techno territories, but it's the Nicolas Jaar remix that'll be the one everyone's after. His first outing since the unexpected success of "A Time For Us", Jaar drops the BPM's re-sings the vocals (or at least we think so) and completely re-imagines the track as a romantic, discoid ballad complete with his trademark brakedown. Quite a genre-bender - will be big!
OLIVERWHO FACTORY "NIGHT LIGHTS (CARL CRAIG)" (Planet E) 13.98$

JAYSON BROTHERS "THE GAME" (Drumpoet) 15.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
First release by Danilo Plessow of Motor City Drum Ensemble on Drumpoet under his JAYSON BROTHERS pseudonym. DrumPoet have realesed some truly great 12"s in thier time but this comes close to being the top dog. Big vocals from killer disco / soul nuggets sit well over those trademark MCDE chunky beats. Raw at times and all the better for it this rocks.
MAAYAN NIDAM "GREATEST TITS EP" (WOLF AND LAMB) 15.98$
TECH HOUSE / FUNKY MINIMAL / / / /
Add to order‘Greatest Tits’ is the tenth record from the Wolf + Lamb camp and Maayan Nidam makes sure its one to remember. Maayan Nidam is part of a fresh team of strong and exciting female producers that are shaking the foundations of the underground house circuit. Previously known as Miss Fitz, Maayan’s recent work on Perlon and Freak n’Chic has found a new depth and highly accomplished air. ‘Greatest Tits’ brings together 4 original cuts - from the funk-inspired layered grooves of ‘Isitin’, to the erotically charged well known sample of ‘Merry Go Round’, each track itching with feeling and infused with passion. Stepping away from the dancefloor, ‘Na Und’ unravels atonal and ambiguous sounds and takes the listener to and unexpected places. Last but not least, ‘Better Stop’ leans on Maayan’s bubbling sense of funk and creates the final stop on this mystical sensory journey
TECHNO / DUBSTEP
AARDVARK "CHOICE ON 12" (EAT CONCRETE) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
ADAM BEYER "ANTISTIUS" (CLR) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Chris is very happy that his long term friend Adam Beyer from Sweden, who runs the Drumcode and Truesoul labels (as most of you may know), has contribute to the 10 year anniversary label compilation. Chris said “He managed to give me an amazing track that I have already been playing up and down since probably the beginning of last summer". You have to know that most of these tracks have been collected over a period of at least the last six months. This one from Adam is called “Antistius” Not only is Chris out for having international artists on this compilation but also his home base in Frankfurt equally has some amazing artists to offer. This track on the B-side is by CLR artist and mastering engineer Brian Sanhaji who has also recently released his album on the label. His contribution to 10 Years of CLR is pretty phat. This one is called “Higgs” and Chris had already been playing it, all over the place, with amazing responses.
FURESSHU "UNTITLED" (PROJECT SQUARED) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
This 12" picks up where Furesshu’s digital releases at a dubstep tempo on Echodub left off but also pushes into the deep, Berlin inspired techno sound that he is presently concentrating on. 1993 sounds fast for its mid 130s tempo, the bass drives the trac
JSL "YELLOW BIRD" (KRAKEN) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Absolutely massive. Do not sleep on this 12” as Kraken records always sell out fast! JSL (aka Wolf Man aka RUF aka Fresh aka Jürgen Flemming) Producer, remixer, DJ, graphic designer, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. One fourth, and graphics headmaster of one
LV & UNTOLD "BEACON" (HEMLOCK) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
The much in demand collab by LV & Untold finally hits wax, back with a stunning Mount Kimbie remix. LV & Untold – Beacon - Possibly the most minimal tune to date by either artist, Beacon rolls on a bare bones set-up of deep swung bass, barely-there percussion and simple bleep-track melody. In the true spirit of the original dubstep pioneers, making very little, sound very BIG. LV & Untold Beacon (Mount Kimbie Remix) - Mount Kimbie deliver a stunning remix. Layering a heap of their trademark melody onto the intro, following that with an instantly memorable rave hook, then easing us out gently with some sweeeet R&B inflected chopped vocals. Stunning stuff.
DJ MADD "FLEX'D(IKONIKA)" (BOKA) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a post-garage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music. DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.
ACTRESS "SPLAZSH" (HONEST JONS) 24.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderDarren Cunningham’s eagerly-awaited new album is an adventurous, ultra-modern, thoroughly British affair, rummaging about in the inner lives of house and techno, and brilliantly elaborating the accomplishments of his debut, "Hazyville". For "SPLAZSH" the fog has lifted, the sounds are less submerged than before, but still sticky and close — a signature combination of exuberance and introversion, luminescence and puzzlement. Unconstrained by the formal cliches of the dance music he loves, Actress’ melodies and arrangements are enthralled by their own genies. Worlds of disturbance and melancholy revolve giddyingly inside the insidious funk of tracks like "Get Ohn" and "Lost". A range of musical influences is redrawn, from speed garage (Always Human) to grime (Wrong Potion), with none crowned king. There is a reflectiveness — the ambient drift of Futureproofing, the radiophonic judder of Supreme Cunnilingus — in amongst the industrial, synth-wave flavours of Casanova, and the stirring, stately Maze. In love with the mysteries of groove and repetition, SPLAZSH is both a culmination and a new beginning for Actress, a substantial and eccentric work from a brave and coolly individual artist.
SLAM MODE "APRAKETA (JEFF MILLS)" (SP) 16.98$ (Restock)
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderJeff Mills reworks the gypsy techno workings of Slam Mode with Joe Claussell doing his overdubs in the background. Very very handy 'Beats' track on the flip too!
WEDGE AND AESOTERIC "A Night on the Wonk" (If Symptoms Persist) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
‘A Night on the Wonk’ is on an experimental tip with highly addictive horn and chime hooks. The Gemmy remix takes the chime section, gives it some of the well known purple treatment and turns it into a highly distinctive but slightly sickly intro. I say sickly but that’s perhaps because I’ve listened to it a lot of times in a fairly short period of time. However we’re then treated to a bleepy roller with moderate variation to keep things interesting. This makes it perfect for an early set or casual listening. ‘Detached Reality’ crackles its way through some haunting vocals and evil guitar riffs creating a tense but soothing atmosphere – detaching you from reality, sinking you into your seat while your mind starts to play tricks with itself. What are we really here for?
GUIDO "ANIDEA" (PUNCH DRUNK) 24.98$ (Restock)
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to order‘Anidea’ is the debut album from young Bristol based producer Guido, who alongside Joker and Gemmy, has trail blazed his way to the forefront of UK dance music. His two 12” releases, ‘Orchestral Lab’ and ‘Beautiful Complication’ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label in 2009, and recently completed remixes for Island Records and Tectonic Records, have garnered Guido extensive press coverage from ist underground blogs to The Guardian broadsheet. This album is the first to emerge from the trio, who have already made an indelible mark on UK underground music. Guido cut his teeth in the embryonic mid-decade Bristol Grime scene, producing instrumental’s for MCs and vocalists culminating in his ‘Unleashed’ mixtape in 2006. His production style shares the ultra vivid colour, melody and rugged texture of golden era Davinche, Skepta and Ruff Squad’s Rapid but also the playfulness and pop sensibility of Timbaland or Neptunes without losing underground edge or appeal.
SBTRKT "2020" (BRAIN MATH) 26.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderSBTRKT steps up once again to BRAiNMATH for a 2x12” of some of his most talked about productions. Limited info, limited copies,
T++ "WIRELESS" (HONEST JONS) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderSince its 2005 debut, Torsten Profrock's T++ project has grown in stature and scope to the point where it's admired by fans of techno, dubstep, d'n'b and experimental electronics alike, and annexed by none. Anchored in the kind of scuffed, sub‐heavy atmospherics Profrock developed in his 90s recordings for Chain Reaction, and naturally influenced by his work with Robert Henke as Monolake, the sound of T++ is singular, always evolving, difficult to fix. But now we come to the end. Wireless will be the last work the Berliner produces under that name. Appropriately enough, it's arguably his most expressive, energetic and fully‐realised offering to date, affirming the enduring fundamentals of the T++ aesthetic even as it steers it into uncharted climes. Long ago snagged by the rhythmic innovations of the post‐jungle underground, on Wireless Profrock makes explicit his debt to the radical fringe of UK garage. Snapping 2‐ step rhythms are at the heart of all four tracks; for all the distress, deconstruction and detournement they undergo at his hands, the spirit and swing of the British soundsystem tradition is there, irreducibly, in their DNA. Further, Wireless is a kind of remix, shot through with the contorted samples of voice and ndingidi on a handful of old East African 78s (from a forthcoming Honest Jon's compilation). The result: a record that sounds at once ancient and modern, possessing a unique tonal language and with it a curious, almost occult power.
SCUBA "ECLIPSE" (ABUCS) 16.98$
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Scuba continues his stream of underground techno influenced releases with a release on his mysterious Vinyl Only label Abucs. As ever there’s a smooth and deep atmosphere going on here and a distinctly 80’s vibe on this occasion, very reminiscent of the type of sound dBridge’s Nonplus label is currently releasing. On the flip current producer of the moment Ramadanman (Hessle Audio, Hemlock Recordings, Swamp81) steps up to remix Scuba’s ‘Tense’, the mechanical and robotic drum pattern is overlaid with Scuba’s trademark Detroit Synths to create an image of an Industrialised Berlin landscape.
DETTMANN "DETTMAN ( 3 X12")" (Ostgut Ton) 25.98$ (Restock)
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderDettmann sounds as fresh and self-contained as techno nowadays can be. And more so, it once and for all establishes its eponym as a genre mainstay.
JEROME SYDENHAM "JUDGEMENT" (Apotek) 17.98$ (Restock)
TECHNO / DUBSTEP / / / /
Add to orderDark and driving stuff from Sydenham. Fast paced beats take you along the straighest of roads. Techno percusion rides side saddle to the glitch beats. A different take on the regular sound but not a bad one by far.
