As the standard by which records are judged increasingly equivocates to their efficacy in exact replication of an “original sound,” so the withering of the music’s integrity increases along with it. Luckily for us there’s individuals like Christian Bloch & Björn Svin, who’ve determined to sculpt & refine their aesthetic and creative disposition to clear the littered path to the truly unique. “NRSB 5”’s only dictate is to follow the uncharted. Revolving around a determined synth loop, it transforms as it unfolds and reassembles, returning with new determination as it obsessively revisits its own chosen refrain under the skilled hand of the producers’ manipulative shape shifting. Never static, always moving, dodging it’s own melody to return with the same body beneath a new costume: the rigid, unyielding control remains intact, as each second serves a precise purpose in it’s masterfully assembled, inter-reliant structure: a beautiful whole, completely unified in it’s chaotic infinity. Bloch & Svin seem blissfully unaware of the mediocrity surrounding them, as they’ve created a distinctly peerless record that cannot and will not be deemed just another derivative accident falling under some infantile subgenre’s unwaveringly devoted following of no ones and nothings. Their mirror of comparison is their own work, their concern their own creative development: a truly internal gaze of quiet self-criticism. Follow their example: follow your own example and, as Tote’s father would direct, “be the only one of your kind.”

Yore returns with a true Dream Team Split EP, pairing Yore label head Andy Vaz with Sistrum manager Patrice Scott. Vaz is up first with a beautiful slice of old-school funk and soul within a Deep house formula, “Back to Square One,” that has a whole lot more in common with Isaac Hayes and James Brown than with Juan Atkins or any other Techno Icon. Accompanied by a wah-wah guitar figure and claps, a bullet-proof bass line leads a nine-minute charge that’s quickly bolstered by a slinkily swinging drum groove. Creamy synth chords and blazing horns intermittently spill over the pulsating mix and then vanish, leaving space for the rhythm to intensify and the track to grow ever more euphoric (and even, towards its close, a bit acidy). A true mission into both Funk and House, which again showcases Vaz’s ultimate diversity as an outstanding Producer. Lil' Tony is a veteran DJ of the Helsinki club scene & also behind those Future Beat Investigators. However, he does not limit himself just to that incorporating Disco, Afro and Cosmic or Balearic sounds in the mix. Cosmic Afro Pan kicks of strong with a heavy rhythm and a huge flanged bassline, which is the hook of the track. The groove evolves constantly as the bass modulates around it. The track peaks towards the end as some little acid noises add on before the other elements get diluted as it winds down. Cosmic Afro Dub, again the name speaks for itself as it is a dubbed out version of the previous track. On the first version the accent is on the low synthetic bass, whilst here Lil' Tony focuses more on the piano keys and the evolution of the beat. A great mixture of Detroit techno and the old cosmic sound.

Tiefschwarz's label returns with this strong 3 tracker from Berliner Ruede. 'The Modest Theme’ is slice of epic tech house., it builds shimmering string instruments around a sonic jungle of machine noise with a colossal horn hook standing out. House or techno rarely comes as dramatic as this and its accompanying tracks add fuel to these insistent, urgent themes. Ruede’s remix of Dillon’s ‘C Unseen Sea’ gathers ghostly surging wind noises and the eerie effects-soaked sounds of a child together with foreboding percussion, it’s carried along at the midpoint of the track by an off kilter synth that bounces in and out of key. The final track ‘It’s On’ picks up the pace of the EP for a bustling finale. A 303 style bassline opens and filters closed throughout the track raising the tension and releasing the pressure while unsettling synths and reverb soaked percussion continue the surreal vibe of the EP.

Continuing down the same path, things strip back a little here with Dobason. A more playful cut with the focus on the overdriven lead bass. Then things in this track take a little melodic left turn and explore a dissonant direction that somehow leads you right back to where you started. Finally leaving you in the deep with Ombù. A subterranean mixture sounding like Basic Channel meets Gotan project. A dreamy plucked synth soaked in reverb dances around some Uruguay style accordion and sequences of percussion.
